Indonesian flag (post revolution)
The Union of Indonesian Socialist Collectives (formerly known as the Indonesian Socialist Republic) is the identity assumed by Indonesia following the Communist revolution in 1979.
Initially Indonesia had good relations with the People's Republic of China however by 1986 relations had turned sour as China sought to increase its influence in the Pacific. Indonesia had strong links with the Soviet Union and Vietnam however and went through a dramatic military expansion in the 1980s.
Indonesia frequently came into conflict with China and the New Commonwealth nations of Australia and New Zealand with numerous skirmishes breaking out throughout the 1980s. As the '91 Disaster erupted Indonesia's armed forces were quickly brushed aside by its enemies and the country suffered devastating attacks upon its infrastructure by Chinese nuclear weapons. After 1991 the country was a mess with very little in the way of law and order or social infrastructure. In 2014 the situation had changed little.
